Chinese New Year

What is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture. It marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and takes place between 21 January and 20 February, depending on the lunar cycles. In 2025, it will be celebrated on 29 January, under the sign of the Snake.

This festival symbolises renewal, prosperity and harmony for the coming year. Each year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, such as the Dragon, the Tiger or the Rat, each representing specific personality traits and energies.

Why this date?

The Chinese New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar. The date varies each year, depending on the second new moon after the winter solstice. This cycle harmonises the phases of the moon with the agricultural seasons, underlining the importance of nature in this culture.

Chinese New Year traditions

This festival is marked by many traditions:

  • Red decorations: Red symbolises good luck and protection from evil spirits.
  • The reunion meal: A big family feast is organised the day before, with symbolic dishes.
  • Red envelopes (Hongbao): These contain money and are given to wish happiness and prosperity.

Cuisine: flavors and symbols

Cuisine plays a central role in this celebration, with each dish chosen for its significance:

  • Ravioli (Jiaozi): Represent wealth.
  • Fish: Symbolising abundance and prosperity.
  • Spring rolls: evoke gold and wealth.
